Project 13 - DeLorean Frame Repair
PJ Grady Europe has undertaken many different types of DeLorean frame repair. This page features work recently carried out on one of our customers cars.
This repair focuses on the front strengthening plate located just behind the crumple tube. Many automotive body shops would opt to just plate over the existing panel and repaint the section. Our belief, based on experience, is that any corrosion or weak areas on the frame should be completely replaced. Whilst addressing the cosmetic look of the frame, plating does nothing to address the
underlying weakness of the metal supports. This page shows a collection of pictures showing the repair being carried out, and highlights our work standards and quality of repair.
With the delicate removal of the plate, to avoid causing any damage to the upper portions of the frame, the internal crumple zones were exposed. This allowed us to see that all of the original epoxy coating had flaked away leaving bare rusted metal exposed.
In the pictures above you can clearly see how the rust has started to effect the lower portions of the main part of the chassis. In the top of the picture you can see that the rust has penetrated the frame completely, as well as the reinforcement part of the crumple zone. The next step was to remove the corroded areas and patch in new metal, as shown in the pictures above and below.
With new patches, the internal sections are complete and the next step is the top plating.
These pictures show the completed frame repair. Notice new towing hooks have been fabricated and installed? The frame now looks very close to stock and is now ready to hit the road as a proud, and safe DeLorean.
