Project 17 - Reproduce DeLorean Left Front Fender

Of all of the stainless steel panels on the DeLorean DMC-12, perhaps the left-front fender is the most revered. This particular panel is in extremely short supply – and commands a ‘premium-plus’ price tag when they do occasionally become available.

Many people have talked of reproducing them – and some have claimed to – but evidence has always been lacking! PJ Grady Europe have also discussed the idea of refabricating a left front fender from scratch – and decided to test the skills of Chris Nicholson to the limit!

This project had been discussed for a number of years before we finally got started in 2004 – although this is very much a project, and needs to be scheduled around customer cars!

Within this page you will see PJ Grady Europe create a left front fender from a flat sheet of 304 stainless steel through to a fender you could fix onto any DeLorean and be proud!

These pictures (above) show the mould going through a three-stage process, ready to accept the stainless steel, ready for hand fabrication.

We first created a pattern which we overlaid onto the stainless steel sheet - the project was finally ready to commence. For the first time in nearly 25 years, another left front fender for a DeLorean!

In these pictures you can see the first ‘shaping’ of the new fender. It’s at this point that dimensions are critical. From this point on, the fender just needs shaping the match its sister (shown opposite).

The fender is now taking its proper shape, although there is still much work to do.

The picture (above) really shows how the fender has been brought along in stages. Although further work is needed, the piece is starting to look like a stock fender.

The pictures (above) show the fender in its almost main structural state. At this point it still needs its main curved arch brought out, along with more curving in the sheet metal.

This project is still work in progress, and we look forward to bringing you further updates as this amazing project is completed.
