Project 5 - Part Refabrication and Regraft of a Drivers-side Rear Fender

This page provides details of the recent rescue of a badly damaged drivers-side rear fender.

A piece of stainless steel cut out to replace a section of damaged fender A curvature is placed into the piece to match the fender

The pictures above show a driver-side rear fender. In the first picture (left), you can see the lower section ready for forming from a flat section. In the picture (right) you can see the first curve formed in place.

The picture on the left shows the bottom fold in place matching the previous curve. At this point dimensions and accuracy are critical. In the picture on the right you can see the section is now complete and ready for attachment to the main panel.

The new section ready for welding The new section laid against the fender

The two pictures (above) show the newly created section ready for tacking and welding into place.

Pictures above show the overall ‘look’ of the new section now it is welded onto the panel. The panel now needs brushing, and filing to make it look as good as it did when it was first formed… however…..

Whilst the picture on the left shows the new section and a project almost completed, unfortunately, the panel needed a new section of stainless on the rear! As seen on the second picture (right).

The picture on the left is a close-up shot of what the panel needs…more stainless! The picture on the right shows the new stainless tacked in place.

The picture on the left shows the patch welded and ready for the final stages. The picture on the right shows the first stages of filing and polishing on the newly created section.

The pictures above now show the completed areas finished. Note that the picture on the right prove that this section has been recreated, as the holes need drilling into the side.

The panel is now complete and ready for installation onto a car.
