Project 7 - Reskinning of an Upper Section of Gullwing Door

A gullwing door showing the damaged section at the top cut away ready for replacement

This project was undertaken on a customers car. It was damaged beyond repair on the upper half of the door. After lots of thought and discussion it was decided to place the ‘seams’ where you can least see them as depicted in the photo.

The damaged door pictured with a replacement section taken from another gullwing door that was beyond repair

With a project like this the most difficult part is the removal of the old skin. Not damaging the superstructure of the door can be very tedious and takes time. In the picture (above) you can see the new donor piece ready for installation, this was from another door which was damaged beyond repair. Removing the donor metal from the door was very hard to do without damaging the lips that run around the whole section on the lower half. Much time was spent in preparation of both the door and the new section.

The replacement section is now welded into place

Once the welded area had been removed and straightened it was time to install the glass and the rest of the gull wing's parts.
