Project 8 - Installation of a Fuel Flap

Pleated hood with cutouts for fuel flap

The project starts of with a normal pleated hood. In the picture above you can see the area which needs to be worked on. All metal which is no longer needed has been removed and the next steps will follow.

Fuel flap edges folded into place

By carefully folding over the edges and double checking each step as we work on the hood, it starts to take on the look of the fuel flap style. As soon as we cut the metal in the beginning process we were committed - folding these pieces is really the point of no return.

Fuel flap edges folded into place

Another view of the inner folded edges. It’s at this point that the hood is now ready for the ‘main’ folds. The whole process of this being successful is dependant upon the original cut-out of the metal being accurate. Leave too much metal and the metal can tear or remove too much and have gaps.

Fuel flap installed and hood highly polished

The finished result after polishing and straightening the metal This particular hood is PJ Grady Europe’s and will be on VIN570 (note the high finish). It will be displayed for DeLorean owners to see at Chicago in 2006 along with the completed Legend car. For further information contact us or contact PJ Grady Inc.

From this point onwards the early hoods are not as rare as before!
