Giorgetto Giugiaro & Ital Design
Ital Design was founded in 1968 By the famous and talented designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Ital
Design, under the guidance of Giugiaro have produced some of the most
famous and unique car designs ever seen. The Lotus Esprit, being another
example from the talented Italian designer.
Giugiaro was born in August 17th 1938 in Garessio Piedmant. He started his career in Fashion design; however not being able to fully articulate his expertise in this trade he soon became disillusioned and went in search of something else. He found Industrial design, and slowly he managed to find his true calling. In Turin, Giugiaro studied art by day and technical design by night. In June 1955, some of his many car sketches were mounted in an end-of-the-year school exhibition. Dante Giacosa, Fiat's technical director, saw the talent behind his work and hired him three months later. He had just turned 17, he soon found himself working for Fiat in the design office.
In 1964 Giugiaro headed up design through 1964 cars at Bertone with such cars as the Giulia GT for Alfa Romeo. At the end of 1965, when Ghia had been written off as being on the road to folding, Giugiaro became head of Ghia's design office in a surprise move that shocked the design world. His first works were studies for Volkswagen and Isuzu, and the four cars presented at the 1966 Motor Show: Maserati Ghibli, De Tomaso Pampero, De Tomaso Mangusta and Fiat Vanessa. The Maserati Ghibli and the De Tomaso Pampero were regarded instantly as masterpieces, and launched Ghia once again in to the spotlight. His work for Isuzu was very important at this time and the Japanese manufacturer built a large number of Ghia designs.
In 1968 after a impressive career Giugiaro decided that it was time to put his talents to the test, and set up
Ital Design with two other partners. By 1983 the company was employing 200 employees with such successes as the Fiat Uno through to the DeLorean, the studio has been involved in some of the most unique car projects of recent history.
Ital Design has styled over 80 production cars and numerous prototypes and concepts, including the DeLorean DMC-12.
Below are two pictures of the Giugiaro designed and built car, the Gabbiano. The car is a concept car based on the Renault 11. This 153.5 in. long 4-seater coupe is compact and aerodynamically effective at the same time. These unique gullwing doors, offer both easy access to the rear passengers as well as the front, most impressive for a gull-winged car.
