After Bill Collins produced the two prototypes, the next phase was to produce a series of cars that could be used for various purposes. Lotus was contracted to undertake this part of the delorean project. In total there were '21' Development car built at Lotus, along with 7 Pilot cars built in Ireland not counting the Visioneering car which is unique in many ways from the Development cars.
